Welcome to St. Augustine’s, Skirlaugh.

Built between 1401 and 1405 it is a grade 1 listed building and one of the finest examples of perpendicular architecture in the country.

Skirlaugh Church 1879

St Augustine’s Church has been welcoming people for over 600 years and our story continues to grow. Walter Skirlaw, the Bishop of Durham and local lad, had this church built in the 1400s as a private chapel. Today we are one of eight parish churches in our benefice and we serve our community and a Local Ecumenical Partnership with our Methodist friends. Find out more about us and our communities on this site.

The site is being rebuilt with new sections added regularly….

This website is part of the Skirlaugh Heritage Project which renovated the building with repairs to stonework, windows and roofs. We are improving the environmental impact of the churchyard and installing solar panels, We also ran a two year programme of events and activities which have included things as diverse as a medieval pageant and a Victorian music hall. We established a Local History Society, and a group has been researching Skirlaugh and district history.

The project was funded by:
National Lottery Heritage Fund
The Bishop Skirlaugh Charity
Withernwick Windfarm Community Fund
Sir John Priestman Charity Trust
Benefact Trust
Yorkshire Historic Churches Trust
Margaret Burwell Fund
Headley Trust
Langdale Charity
Listed Places of Worship Grant Scheme

And thanks to our partners

The Centre for Study of Christianity and Culture helped and guided us throughout our three year project, from start to end, from bid writing to evaluation. During our operational phase they especially assisted us in interpretation, digital development, training volunteers, and establishing a local history society. Dr Louise Hampson of CSCC has been a constant source of support and encouragement, sharing some of her vast knowledge, especially of the medieval period, and helping us with many of our activities.
